Walden On July 4, 1845, Henry David Thoreau arrived at a cabin beside a pond in an area of Massachusetts woodland near Concord, on land owned by his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson. That pond was Walden pond, and it was here that Thoreau would make his home for the following two years and two months.Thoreau's time on the shores of Walden pond produced the author's first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, but the experience of living out here beyond the limits of the city and society would affect Thoreau profoundly. It was this period of his life that inspired the writing of Walden, also known as Life in the Woods.Walden is an analysis of reconnection and living simply and in harmony with nature, reflecting on life and the world around us. It remains one of the classics of 19th century American literature and has spurred on the careers of countless naturalists, explorers and thinkers ever since.
