Rubus watson x 'Thunderhead'

Thunderhead is a novel blackberry cultivar that resulted from a carefully controlled crossing of the thorny primocane-fruiting blackberry plant ORUS 4355-2 and the thornless primocane-fruiting plant ‘Prime-Ark® Freedom’, USPP34,914. Developed by the USDA-ARS breeding program in Oregon, it is the first of its kind and boasts strong plant vigor and high yields of medium-sized, glossy, and firm berries that are bursting with exceptional flavor and quality. Its small seed size adds to its appeal, making it an ideal choice for fresh eating right off the plant!

With its genetic background originating from Eastern U.S. varieties, this newcomer is anticipated to thrive in most regions where primocane-fruiting blackberries are currently cultivated. Resistance to sunburn makes this especially suitable for hot region growers. This is not a thornless variety, there are no thorns in the fruit bearing portion of the canes, the thorns are only present up to about 3' on the plants. Quick to establish - 2nd year yields are on par with older primocane varieties that are fully established! Compact size makes trellising a breeze.

Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 5

Mature Height: 4' x 4'

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: Late

Pollination: Self-Fruitful
