The 1 inch diameter openings on top of the platform feeder allow the cardinals and grosbeaks to feed through the openings with their thick bills. While the second layer has 1/2 inch diameter openings to restrict the amount of seed squirrels can clutch. There’s an extra 1/4 inch of space between the perforated metal flooring and the lower white metal grid, so squirrels can't quite reach the seed with their little arms!
