Dr. Nelson G. Simpson brings more than twenty-five years of combined experience in military and civilian construction, structural drafting, and design consulting, supported by extensive teaching at both the community college and university levels. He is currently a full-time faculty member in the Drafting and Design Engineering Technology program at Houston City College, an ABET-accredited program focused on workforce-aligned technical education.Dr. Simpson’s professional background includes seventeen years as a structural draftsman contributing to a wide range of projects involving structural steel and precast concrete systems. His experience spans churches, educational facilities, industrial and commercial buildings, public infrastructure, and architecturally complex developments. This breadth of practice has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of how structural drawings evolve from conceptual design through fabrication and field erection.In developing this textbook, Dr. Simpson recognized a persistent gap in available instructional resources. Many existing texts emphasize theoretical concepts while giving limited attention to the practical sequencing, coordination, and documentation tasks that define daily work in professional drafting environments.
