Is the Resume Summary Dead?

Once a staple, the summary statement seems to be on its way out — or perhaps it's already dead.

I've read many resumes that contain summary statements which, in effect, say nothing at all. I've spoken to many recruiters and hiring managers who have told me they don't even read summary statements when they come across them.
