Announcing the Employees’ Choice Awards of the Best Places to Work 2017, Glassdoor CEO and co-founder Robert Hohman joined Gayle King, Charlie Rose, and Norah O’Donnell at CBS This Morning to discuss which companies made the prestigious list and what sets them apart.
Now in its ninth year, Best Places to Work is based on over 2.1 million company reviews on subjects such as benefits, pay, and work-life balance. This year, the top five companies included World Wide Technologies, Google, Boston Consulting Group, Facebook, and, coming in at first, Bain & Company. The secret to these companies’ success? Hohman zeroed in on a few key aspects.
1. High-quality hires
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that employees love surrounding themselves with talented coworkers. At Bain, a three-time winner, “they hire super smart people,” said Hohman. “When you read on Glassdoor about what it’s like to work there, they love that aspect of it. They get to come together as a team with other really smart people.”

2. Recognition
Recognizing and rewarding high-performing employees is another key of an excellent workplace. Bain employees “love the fact that Bain is very much a meritocracy where if you work hard, you are rewarded,” according to Hohman.

3. Mission
At the end of the day, employees want to be able to feel like they’ve made a difference; that their work has a tangible impact on the world. This was a big factor in the high rankings of companies like Google and Facebook, whose products touch the lives of billions of other people. “In many ways, that’s an engineer’s version of fame,” he added.
