Growing up in New Jersey, I looked at my Latino friends, neighbors, and classmates — people from Ecuador, Colombia, and Cuba — and I was struck by how people from all these different countries, thousands of miles apart, were unified by language. Even though Mexicans insisted they were different from Dominicans, who were different from Puerto Ricans, who were different from Venezuelans, it was plain to see we were unified by language.
