Starting in January, Ameican Express will expand its paid parental leave policy for mothers and fathers to 20 weeks at full pay, plus another six to eight weeks for women who give birth and require medical leave.
That’s a huge improvement from the current policy of six weeks for the “primary parent” and just two weeks for the supporting or secondary parent. Taking cues from companies like Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Etsy, Amex is now making huge efforts to attract and retain employees with children.

Plus under the new plan, full-time and part-time employees who have worked at Amex for at least a year are eligible. And it doesn’t end there. American Express is giving parents access to a 24-hour lactation consultant and mothers who go on business trips will be able to ship their breast milk home for free.

But not to worry, these perks also extend to employees who plan to have children in the future. Expectant parents will have access to a parent concierge, whom they can go to for information on the company’s family benefits and resources. And employees who wish to have a child will receive up to $35,000 for adoption or surrogacy for up to two children. Those undergoing infertility treatments, meanwhile, will receive up to a lifetime maximum of $35,000 to help defray costs.
Um, this sounds like a super sweet deal to us.
Making this parental policy even sweeter is the fact that American Express is hiring nationwide. Parents, polish your resume. Wannabe parents, get interview ready. American Express looks like it could be the company you go to and stay with for years to come.
